The History of The King’s Singers
In 2018, our 50th year, we reflected on the history of The King's Singers, its unique elements, and the amazing people who helped it grow. While we belong to the 21st century, a golden thread connects us to our beginnings on 1st May 1968.
Our name comes from King's College, Cambridge, where the original six members were choral scholars. They began singing together in the mid-1960s, first recording in 1965 under the name 'Schola Cantorum Pro Musica Profana in Cantabridgiense'. In August 1966, Sir Neville Marriner invited them to perform, and by 1st May 1968, they made their London debut as The King's Singers. We celebrate this as our official founding date.
The success of that debut led to connections with the BBC, record labels, and composers. By the early 1970s, we had established a strong reputation in the UK, and in 1972, our international career took off with a 35-concert tour of Australia and New Zealand. Soon, invitations came from South Africa, Canada, and the USA, and The King's Singers became a global sensation.
Throughout our history, we've performed in major concert halls worldwide, appeared on television, released over 150 recordings, and won Grammy and Emmy awards. Life on the road has been filled with laughter, tears, and special moments, which we shared in our 2018 "GOLD Stories" series, marking highlights from each year of our journey. Read the full story.
