From Executive Director Susan Scott
This week’s Music Connects artist is soulful jazz vocalist Sharon Marie Cline. We originally planned to feature Sharon in our April 2020 “Cabaret” event honoring Jordan Laby and Barbara Meister for lifetime support of the arts and community. As life would have it, that event moves to next year and Sharon’s “digital” appearance precedes her “live” one!
While trained classically and in musical theater, Sharon is celebrated in jazz circles today as following in the fabled tradition of Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and other greats, while bringing her own fresh and contemporary styling to the material – be it jazz, soul, pop, Broadway or original.
For MC9, Sharon and her very talented collaborators present their unique musical arrangement of “Close to You,” Burt Bacharach’s monster hit for the Carpenters. Sharon calls it a “re-imagining.” Expect some nice, extended jazz moments.
In her personal message, Sharon talks about different kinds of “closeness” and says she is pondering “creative ways” to be close during these keep-your-distance coronavirus times! I’ll bet a lot of us are, too.
Be healthy, be hopeful, be creative.
