From Executive Director Susan Scott
George Gershwin planned to write a cycle of twenty-five preludes. He completed six, and published three which became very famous indeed (and were subsequently arranged for violin and piano by master violinist Jascha Heifetz). Our Music Connects artists perform the first of them – Prelude No.1. It’s heavily and gloriously jazz-influenced and you’ll recognize the distinctive five-note motif that opens it. While I was sorry to see the piece end so soon, I loved the energetic performance and I’m sure you will, too. As to our musicians, the first is VMF’s longtime Artistic Director Nuvi Mehta – violinist, conductor, member of a distinguished musical family, and accomplished story-teller. His popular pre-concert lectures delight both VMF audiences and those of the San Diego Symphony, his principal home. Our second performer is Bryan Verhoye, a seasoned concert pianist in both classical and jazz settings, a published composer and arranger, and an educator. Bryan has joined VMF on several occasions, including as part of a piano duo that presented two of our annual Children’s Concerts for VUSD.
Sending thanks to Nuvi, Bryan, Mr Gershwin, and you, our festival family, for joining in this edition of our digi-festival.
