Ventura Music Festival – Ventura CA

MC20 – Gordon Goodwin

From Executive Director Susan Scott

Dear Friends,

“Gordon Goodwin is a gifted and creative pianist, an explosive, ‘kick butt’ sax player, an arranger with absolutely no limit of musical styles and a composer of some of the best (and cleverly titled) compositions ever.” This Grammy winner and 20-time nominee is also the possessor of three Emmy awards.

Gordon built a larger-than-life reputation throughout the music industry for his composing, arranging and playing skills. Among his heavyweight clients: Disney, Warner Brothers and Steven Spielberg, and his roster of artists included the impressive Ray Charles, Christina Aguilera, Johnny Mathis and Quincy Jones to name a few.

Gordon was well into his career by the late 90’s when he had an epiphany that though it was great writing music for other people, “perhaps I should plant my own flag.” Thus Gordon Goodwin’s BIG Phat Band was born, populated by L.A.’s finest players and regarded as one of the most exciting large jazz ensembles on the planet.

Little Phat (at nine members) came a little later, with each iteration celebrated for the excellence of its members and for taking the big band tradition into the new millennium with a contemporary, highly original sound featuring the witty, intricate compositions referred to earlier and in a veritable grab bag of styles: Latin, swing, blues, classical, rock, and more.

VMF at the Drive In (that’s us!) will present Gordon Goodwin’s Little Phat Band LIVE at the Ventura Fairgrounds on Thursday, September 24th.

One reviewer wrote that “Goodwin’s music is nothing less than astonishing when experienced live.” See and hear for yourself. If you haven’t been to a Drive In concert yet, you should. It’s fun as well as socially-distanced and audience-safe . . . and LIVE!
