From Executive Director Susan Scott
Said to be possessed of “one of the most breathtaking voices on planet Earth,” Perla Batalla takes center stage in this second edition of Music Connects.
Born into a family immersed in music, Perla’s rich career story often begins with Leonard Cohen hiring her as a backup singer for his first international tour. This led to a lifelong friendship and, with his encouragement, the start of her rich solo career. It’s a career that now includes Mexican, South American and American songbooks, a Frida Kahlo-inspired song cycle and her glorious Tribute to Leonard Cohen concert which has played to sold-out houses throughout the U.S. and Europe.
Perla lost a dear friend to Covid-19 and her Music Connects selection reflects this. She chooses a famous song about a man who swears he is dying from a broken heart and the little bird who comes and sings to him that it’s good to feel so deeply because if he didn’t, he may as well be made of stone. I’ll reserve the title for the video. Most of you will know it, I think. It’s beautiful and emotional. Perla cries. I did, too, but it’s not required. I know we’re all experiencing deep “feeling” moments as we move through life as it is currently presenting. I know none of us is made of stone.
