From Executive Director Susan Scott
| We have featured one group – a family, actually – more than any other throughout the Festival’s history. That would be the internationally renowned quartet, the Romeros – dubbed “the Royal Family of the Guitar” – and founded in 1958 by the legendary Celedonio with his sons Celin, Pepe and Angel, each of whom made their performing debuts by the time they were seven. The quartet dazzled audiences everywhere.|
Time marches on. No surprise, Celin, Pepe and Angel have children similarly possessed of musical genes. The patriarch Celedonio dies in 1996. Ultimately, his grandsons Lito and Celino will join their father and uncle in the family business and the renowned Romeros quartet plays on today, with Pepe also performing an active solo schedule.
We wanted to honor the Romeros’ special contribution to the Festival in this MC-19 edition, so enjoy Nuvi’s wonderful tribute complete with excerpts and a story from the Romeros’ 1967 appearance on Ed Sullivan! (Nancy Sinatra was also on the bill! and wearing white boots I’ll bet.)
Then sit back and savor Pepe’s solo performance of Celedonio’s Fantasia. It’s a gem. I think you’ll love it.
