PERLA BATALLA, a former backup singer for Leonard Cohen, got her solo start with his encouragement. She is the recipient of the United Nation’s Earth Charter Award for extraordinary devotion to social and economic justice and the Premio Fronterizo Award for healing work in the world.
MICHAEL SOBIE has toured the world as pianist and music director with dozens of Broadway musicals such as Wicked, Les Misérables, Aida, Altar Boyz and Xanadu.
DIMISTRIS MAHLIS‘s virtuosic cross-cultural oud and guitar compositions and solos have been featured on many artist tours and the Oscar©-winning film Argo.
KEVIN McCORMICK has toured, recorded and produced with musicians such as Jackson Browne, Melissa Etheridge, Crosby Still and Nash, Judy Collins, Kenny Wayne Sheperd, Keb’ Mo’ and John Mayall.
GILBERTO GONZALEZ has worked with a diverse selection of artists throughout the world, including Benise, Luis Munoz, Jaime Camil and Vicente Fernandez.
ALEX MEDELES began playing professionally at the age of 14. Since then he has toured the world with groups such as Benise, Giovanni Marradi, Leiden, The Klaus Mayer Big Band and Leo Bentley.
The Grammy© nominated singer- songwriter with “one of the most breathtaking voices on planet Earth,” returns from last year’s triumphant Tribute to Leonard Cohen with a concert that includes selections from her Frida Kahlo-inspired Blue House song cycle along with selections from her Mexican, South American and American songbooks. And, perhaps a classic or two from Leonard Cohen!
Critics praise Batalla as “a California Chicana proud of her mestiza heritage” who is “musically adventurous.” The solo artist, composer and arranger “has created a musical voyage well worth taking.” But “above all, she is a born storyteller with a rambunctious sense of humor.”
Perla Batalla was born in L.A. to a family immersed in music—her father, a Mexican singer and D.J.; her uncle in the renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán; and her Argentine mother ran Discoteca Batalla, a bustling Venice record store that served as a hub for Latino culture in West L.A.
Besides Bird on the Wire—her 2007 tribute release to friend and mentor Leonard Cohen—her other six CDs include Love Bigger with piano jazz great Karen Hammack; Gracias a la vida, an anthology of traditional South American songs; Heaven and Earth: The Mestiza Voyage and The Perla Collection of 76 songs.
